Frequently Asked Questions

I am not a sporty person – is Sports and Remedial Massage for me?

Yes, anyone can benefit from a Sports and Remedial Massage. Muscle tensions often develop through incorrect posture or repetitive movements that are work related which are not linked to sport.

What do I do when I arrive at the clinic?

Please arrive at the clinic no more than 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. As it is based on a residential street, please park on the the driveway, and please wait in your car until the therapist/trainer comes out and greets you. If you have walked to the appointment/session, please wait outside the clinic until you are welcomed in as there may be another client in the room.

What should I wear?

For a sports massage, comfortable loose clothing. During the whole session you will be covered with a towel and only the part of your body that is being work on will be exposed.

For personal training, comfortable clothing and trainers.

What if I am ill and can't attend my appointment or session?

If you are feeling ill and are contagious please refrain from attending. Please do try and give 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or you may still be charged for your appointment.

Can I cancel or change my appointment?

Yes. When you book online you have an option to cancel, change or add another appointment or session. This can be done by following the link at the bottom of the original confirmation email with the booking system. Please give 24 hours notice if you want to cancel or change your appointment or you may be charged 50% of the treatment price (see cancellation policy).

Do you do deep tissue massage?

Yes, deep tissue massage is incorporated in a Sports and Remedial Massage and is used amongst many more techniques, which help to lengthen and strengthen shortened or weakened muscle fibres.

Does it hurt?

With some deeper techniques you may experience some discomfort depending on the state of your muscles. However, treatment is always performed within your own pain threshold. Therefore during a session you will be repeatedly asked to give the therapist a pain level number between 1 (no pain at all) and 10 (unbearable) to ensure that you can relax throughout the entire session whilst the most effective treatment is being applied.

Is it safe for pregnant women to receive Sports and Remedial Massage?

In the first 3 months Sports and Remedial Massage is not recommended, however during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters it’s ok.

What medical history do you need to know?

If you have any specific medical conditions that might be affected by a treatment I will need to know about them. If you are unsure do ask you GP first if it is safe for you to attend. If you have had a surgery or fracture and have notes or a letter please bring them with you. If you have already had some physiotherapy and have a list of exercises please bring them too.

How many treatments will I need?

This is completely dependent on the condition of your soft tissue and the length of time it has been troubling you. The number of treatments can be reduced by your own input by following post treatment advice. However as a general guide I find that the average client needs three treatments once a week for three weeks.

Is it a good idea to get a Sports and Remedial Massage after a workout?

Yes, definitely. It will reduce the typical muscle soreness you experience after a good workout as the massage will help to flush lactic acid and other waste products out of your body. You should drink plenty of water, which will help in the flushing process.

Can Sports and Remedial Massage be harmful?

It is a non-invasive and low-risk therapy, but certain conditions preclude treatment:

  •  injuries less than four days old (kinesiotape can benefit at this stage)

  •  early stage fractures (massage will help restore muscle function after the initial healing process has finished)

  •  deep vein thrombosis

  • varicose veins (massage surrounding the area is fine)

  • open wounds (massage can be used on unaffected areas)

  • infectious skin diseases

  • first trimester of pregnancy

  • tumors / cancer

  • arterio and artherosclerosis

  • recent surgery

Why should I use a Personal Trainer?

Some people are happy to follow their own programme in their own time and place; for those who lack the time, or the motivation, or the energy to train effectively on their own, a Personal Trainer can be the answer. The support, advice and encouragement comes with safe exercise technique to help you avoid injuries.

Where will my Personal Training sessions take place?

Your Personal Training sessions will take place in Moray Movements personal gym studio. The gym studio has all of the equipment we will need.

What happens during a personal training session?

A personal training session will normally last for one hour. This will follow along the lines of a brief warm-up followed by your main training programme where you will focus on your goals using cardiovascular, strength or flexibility exercises. Finally there will be a cool down or relaxation period. Any programme may vary from one session to the next according to the clients' needs and progress.

Will you ask me about me personal lifestyle?

The nature of personal training is such that it incorporates your needs, goals and preferences. The trainer will need to ask some initial questions during the consultation, which probe the demands that are placed on you from your job or lifestyle. Typically the first session will include questions about :

  • Basic personal details

  • Medical background

  • Fitness background

  • Lifestyle factors (e.g. smoking or drinking)

  • Nutritional habits (you may be asked to keep a diary)

  • Personal goals and objectives in relation to fitness
